You see the flash, then wait for the rumble. It’s one of those sky‑moments that feels almost theatrical. A good dramtic pause written by nature itself. But behind the drama lies a simple truth: light and sound don’t travel at the same speed.
⚡ Why Lightning and Thunder Happen during storm?
Lightning is nothing but a giant electrical spark. Inside storm clouds, water droplets and other such thing collide. This results into separation of charges. The top of the cloud becomes positively charged, the bottom negatively charged. When the difference between positive and negative grows too strong, the air which is usually insulating (do not allow conduction of electricity like rubber) breaks down. A surge of electricity shoots through the sky or toward the ground. That bright streak is lightning.
The thunder on the other hand is the sound made by lightning. When lightning flashes, it heats the air around it to about 30,000°C. This is extremely hot temperature (for comparison, water boils at 100°C) hotter than the Sun’s surface. This sudden heating makes the air expand explosively, creating a shockwave like when something like a cracker bursts we can feel the pressure changes. As the shockwave travels outward, we hear it as thunder. Sometimes a sharp crack, sometimes a rolling rumble.
🌩️ Why We See Light First and hear thunder sound later?
Lightning and thunder are born at the same moment, but they don’t arrive together. This is because of the difference in speed of light and sound. The light (lightning in our case) travels at 300,000 kilometers per second, reaching our eyes almost instantly. Sound, however, moves much slower about 0.343 km per second through air. That’s why the flash streaks across the sky is seen first, and the rumble is heard later on.
⏱️The fun trick to find how far the thunder strikes.
Step 1: Count the seconds between lightning and thunder.
Step 2: Divide by 3 to estimate distance in kilometers (or by 5 for miles).
Example: If you count 9 seconds between the lighting and rumble, the strike was about 9/3 = 3 km away.
We usually do not hear thunder beyond 20 km, so storm is far away if you don’t hear it.
Lightning and thunder are partners born together, but separated by speed. The pause between them is nature’s way of teaching us a little physics.
